joy has been there all along

joy has been there all along

i've been paying more attention lately.

not to the big milestones or the moments that look impressive from the outside, but to the quiet ones that often pass by unnoticed.

the smell of the kettle just before it boils.

morning light spilling through the kitchen window.

fresh sheets at the end of a long day.

an evening walk without a destination.

hearing someone i love laugh from another room.

the older i get, the more i realise these are the moments that shape a life.

none of them are extraordinary, yet they're available to many of us every single day. they ask very little of us beyond our attention. the challenge is that modern life has taught us to move so quickly that we often rush straight past them.

for a long time, i believed joy was something waiting for me at the end of the list.

after the work was finished.

after the emails were answered.

after the house was clean.

after i had finally done enough to deserve a moment for myself.

somewhere along the way, i realised i had been postponing one of the very things that gives us the energy to keep going.

joy isn't something that belongs at the finish line.

it's something we're invited to experience along the way.

these days, i'm much less interested in chasing extraordinary moments.

i'm far more interested in protecting ordinary ones.

a slow morning before the day begins.

a nourishing meal shared with someone i love.

a conversation that leaves me feeling understood.

a cup of tea that gently reminds me to pause before moving on to whatever comes next.

these moments don't ask us to buy anything, achieve anything or become someone new.

they simply ask us to be present.

i think one of the greatest challenges of modern life is that our attention is constantly being pulled somewhere else. we're encouraged to think about what's next before we've fully experienced what's here.

we're planning tomorrow while today quietly slips past.

i've noticed that whenever i slow down, even for a few minutes, something begins to shift.

i feel more grateful.

more patient.

more grounded.

more connected to the people around me and to myself.

my circumstances haven't necessarily changed.

my attention has.

and sometimes, that's enough to change the way an entire day feels.

i've come to believe that joy isn't something we have to search for.

it's already woven into everyday life, waiting to be noticed.

it's found in the rituals that slow us down, the people we love, the meals we prepare, the conversations we remember and the quiet moments that ask nothing more than our presence.

perhaps that's why i believe so deeply in simple rituals like making a cup of tea.

those few minutes of waiting invite us to step out of the rush and return to ourselves. they remind us that life isn't only made up of the milestones we'll remember years from now. it's also made up of the countless ordinary moments that quietly become the fabric of a beautiful life.

i hope today gives you one of those moments.

and if it does, i hope you allow yourself to pause long enough to truly receive it.

you are well on your way.
