we've forgotten how to listen to our bodies

we've forgotten how to listen to our bodies

our bodies have always been speaking to us.

the challenge is that many of us have slowly forgotten how to listen.

it rarely happens overnight. over time, we're taught to look outside ourselves for answers. we search google. we scroll social media. we listen to podcasts, ask our friends and follow the advice of experts we admire. while guidance can be incredibly valuable, it can also become easy to trust every voice except our own.

as a nutritionist, i believe deeply in education. i believe in asking questions, learning from science and seeking support when we need it. at the same time, i believe one of the most meaningful things i can help a woman do is build confidence in what she's already noticing.

your body is constantly communicating with you.

it lets you know when you're tired, when you're hungry, when your energy is running low and when something doesn't feel quite right. it tells you when you need rest, when you're carrying too much, and when you've reached your limit.

these signals have always been there.

what often changes is our ability to hear them.

many of us have become so used to pushing through discomfort that ignoring our body's signals starts to feel normal. we eat because the clock tells us it's lunchtime, even if we're not hungry. we work through exhaustion because there's still another task to finish. we celebrate productivity while quietly accepting that feeling depleted has become part of everyday life.

i've been there too.

most of us have.

learning to listen to your body isn't about getting everything right. it isn't about eating perfectly every day or always feeling deeply connected to yourself. there will be seasons when life feels busy, when emotions shape the choices we make, and when we lose touch with ourselves for a while.

that's part of being human.

what matters is learning to approach your body with curiosity instead of judgement.

what is my body trying to tell me today?

i've found that this question opens the door to a very different conversation.

instead of looking for something that's wrong, we begin looking for something that's asking for our attention.

our relationship with our body changes when we start listening with compassion.

i've come to believe that our bodies are one of the most important relationships we'll ever have. like any meaningful relationship, they grow stronger the more attention we give them.

that attention doesn't have to be complicated.

it can be as simple as noticing how your energy feels when you wake up. paying attention to the meals that leave you feeling nourished. recognising the people, places and routines that help your nervous system settle. becoming aware of what restores you, and what quietly drains you.

these small observations often hold the wisdom we've been searching for.

lasting wellbeing is rarely built through dramatic changes. more often, it grows through small moments of awareness repeated over time. each time we choose to pay attention, we strengthen our relationship with ourselves.

i often wonder how different our lives would feel if we spent a little less time trying to silence our bodies, and a little more time listening to what they've been trying to say all along.

perhaps your body is asking for more rest.

perhaps it's asking for nourishment, movement, stillness or support.

perhaps it's simply asking you to slow down long enough to hear it.

wherever you are today, i hope you trust that your body is worthy of your attention.

it has been on your side from the very beginning.

you are well on your way.
